Shelters are opened on an AS NEEDED BASIS. Shelters usually will be opened up one at a time in the areas that are most likely to be in the recovery mode from an event, or closest to the areas where evacuees from other counties may be coming through. Risk shelters are shelters that meet the Red Cross standard to withstand hurricane force winds.There are only two shelters in Columbia County that are Risk shelters:
Westside Elementary School -- SW State Rd. 252-B and Troy Road and also
Fort White High School: 17828 SW State Road 47, Fort White, Florida.
Host shelters can be used when this area is not in immenent danger of a storm hitting our county directly.Risk shelters can also be host shelters, but host shelters CAN NOT be risk shelters.Following is a list of host shelters in Columbia County.
